Zoom H6 Garageband Ipad

Zoom H6 Garageband Ipad Average ratng: 8,1/10 7249 reviews

Aug 08, 2017 Zoom’s new Livetrak L-12 is a mixing desk, iPad audio interface, recorder and effects rack, all in one box. I am using an iPad 2, later models may very well control USB power and limit access with non-standard equipment. So, going forward, I use the Apogee One as a microphone (built-in microphone is excellent) and I have the option of connecting an external microphone (like the H2) using the Apogee One as an interface.

Does anyone know if the Zoom R8 works as a controller for the iPad, specifically GarageBand and Cubasis and others? Maybe even AUM?

I believe it works for Auria,

  • I tried it a couple years ago and never got it working..but a lot has changed in the iOS world since then

  • I'll try to hook up and give it a go. Love my Zoom R8.

That would be rad. I'm planning on picking one up tomorrow -- maybe.

  • @mistercharlie it's a really versatile bit of kit and probably under-rated by many folks. It does so much and has such a logical workflow.

  • These have issues with clock drift that make it a pain to use in the long run:

Why do you prefer it over the iPad for recording? For me it seems like it would be easier to just get down to recording, instead of futzing with a million options. Kind of the reasons I prefer a plain old guitar amp over BIAS FX for most things.

  • Any luck with the R8 and ipad? I am close to buying a Pro 12.9 and have the R8 already..I had been wondering if it would work

  • It works with AUM, but not GB or Cubasis. That's down to Cubasis and GB though--they don't seem to be controllable with any hardware surface. If you use Auria, you should be good though. (I bought an R8 yesterday, so I tested it out).

  • Here's a possible tip for R8 users. Mine wouldn't power on if hooked up to an iPad using just the new USB 3 CCK, and connected to power using a 12-watt iPad charger.

It would start up fine connected the the USB port of my Mac, or to the iPad via a regular powered USB hub. I concluded it was drawing too much power to even boot.

On a hunch, I switched the R8's Phantom Power option from 48v to 24v. Now it starts up using the CCK just fine, meaning it can work with my iPad. I also swapped the batteries at the same time, but that shouldn't make any difference.

It seems odd, but it also worked. Also odd is that I don't use Phantom Power, and it wasn't switched on. Still, maybe this helps someone.

I was asking them on the Spire fb page three weeks ago if they (please) could implement Audiobus support into the app and received a message today that this was 'noted!', so might be a good sign it will be coming in the near future

Or not. I note a lot of things my wife says..

    Noted.

  • I just checked out the recording demos people did with the Spire Studio on their page:

the so-called 'pro' mic that comes built in with the device doesn't sound good at all. And it does seem that some of the recordings had pretty bad clipping. I love the idea but this device is definitely not worth the asking price. I can do everything this can with a Zoom H2n at only a fraction of the price albeit without the multitracking and WiFi connectivity!

  • How does this compare to the Zoom H6? It's the same price. Can't I use the free (and amazing) spire vocal app as the recorder app all while using the zoom as the mic into my iOS devise? No need for wifi to get things done..use your iPad to mix or stand alone with the Zoom color screen. Am I missing something? The Zoom to do essentially the same thing adding maybe 1 cord to the situation..if I wanted to use my sm7b mic..so? Oh and gain auto gainstaginh for one channel is nice but I can just sing full volume and back off the gain. And one last thing, the Zoom isn't put into one recording app option. What am I missing?

  • looks and sounds like a lifestyle gadget to my humble ears.
Crisp (as to be expected by iZotope's processors) and overhyped highs with a midrange just flat and lifeless. I'd take any oldfashioned 4-track Tascam over this any time..

  • I think this is aimed at a different market segment than anyone who already owns high quality mics, pres, and a/d converters/interface. The trick here is the auto mic check for levels and Bluetooth sync with the I device.

  • certainly - but if they claim 'Grace Design' and the result isn't much different from a regular iPhone's output (processed with similiar tools) then it's false labeling at least.
Most people fail on the internal mic(s) because it's tough to place the device in a proper position and forget to deactivate auto-gain/input filter by setting it to 'measurement mode'.

The appeal is obviously convenience, not quality. Might as well just use the Spire app with the built-in mic on the phone though, because it does do that very well, the DSP is really very good IMO. Not sure what extra benefits you get from the $350 hardware.

  • Was reading the comments above. has anyone actually purchased one or the comments are based on demos only?

  • Sonic state overview (mostly driven by a sales rep).

  • It's funny, the older I get, the more I dig the limitations of a solution like this. One of my main problems is that the iPad is often a fun house, where I can get distracted by the ornamentation of an arrangement rather than the song itself or the authenticity of a performance of a tune. Is this thing dumb compared to a separate DAW app, a couple of nice condenser mics, and a more traditional Apogee interface or something? Yes. But, could it possibly yield better art in the end? That's the key question for me..

  • I have a zoom H6 I plug into my iPad and record through various apps and the H6 sounds like garbage compared to the Spire Studio. I was hoping since the Spire uses Grace preamps, that this would be the case. If I plug my Neumann or Shure SM7B into the H6, the noise floor is just stupid. Using the onboard XY capsule on the H6 is still noisier than the Spire. I was actually shocked considering I recorded vocals and guitar simultaneously, plugging in my acoustic and my Shure for vocals directly into the Spire, how there was no noise and very clear separation. The onboard mic isn't as great as my SM7B, but it beats the H6 capsules IMO.

Yes, audiobus would be lovely. Also, I'd like more editing options in the app. I believe the files can be exported to a daw however. I like how I can record with Spire alone, or using the app on my phone which also allows me to run other programs simultaneously. Next I'm testing to see if I can use the Spire Studio with other apps.

Again, this beats the Zoom H6, and even the H5 and H4. I've been loyal to zoom for handling my portable audio needs for years but this little clunky interface has better sound quality. Sorry to disappoint. My H6 is going up in the closet.

  • Anybody know which band they used for the commercial?

if you mean the first one in the first post of this thread, the band is Paper Citizen and the song is Anywhere We Want To

the Spire version of the song is on Soundcloud

I'm still waiting for the Europe version of this Spire thingy, would love to have one

Just read .. good to know spire sounds better than zoom

  • It’s also way bigger than the Zoom. And it connects to the app via Wi-Fi, so if you’re hooked up , you can’t connect to your home Wi-Fi.

I have one I don’t use, and would let go. I’m in Germany, if anyone’s interested

this thing is a whopping $70 off at the moment (90 € off here in Germany)

I'm gonna get me one now

I need to re-ignite this old thread because I can't find it anywhere on the inter webs. Does anybody know if the Spire can be used with other apps or is it closed solution that only works with the spire app? It seems a bit misleading because if you search for iOS interface, its one of the first that pops up in Google and on Sweetwater.

Just bought one and used it for the first time yesterday. You can only record into the Spire app, as far as I know. It’s very simple to use, though, and sounds great. When I had 8 tracks, I airdropped the separate tracks to my iPad from my phone and opened them in cubasis. Early days, but it seems like a brilliant bit of kit.

  • edited December 2019

I’ve got one on the way.

The app is spire specific (no Audiobus/Link goodness), but you can export the 8 tracks as individual wavs.

Also it’s possible to collaborate with people that don’t have a spire but do have the free app. Android devices can work with the Spire (probably the reason it’s the top result) and I believe there’s an Izotope cloud service.

I will know more when this clears German border control.

I understand its great at recording 8 tracks with quality preamps. I just think it would be extra cool if I could use it directly with Cubasis or AUM. Lets say i have a cool track building in my DAW and I want to add vocals or a guitar, I can't see how this is useful for that. Can the Spire App import audio? That way I can at least bounce a Cubasis session, import it into Spire, record my audio, then export that back into Cubasis?

  • yes it can easily import audio and in the way you described

Thanks.I think they'd open up their market if they allowed it to work not only with iOS apps but as a Mac/PC interface as well. Hopefully they will soon! Just my 2 cents.

Thanks. Seems like a lot of work for something that can probably easily be modified to work with other apps but I guess Izotope is trying to keep it all in house. I think they'd open up their market if they allowed it to work not only with iOS apps but as a Mac/PC interface as well. Just my 2 cents.

Would buy in a heartbeat if they opened things up.

You will be prompted to enter your Google credentials (Gmail ID & Password). Windows Enter the details to sign-in. Launch the Bluestacks app. Launch the Google Play Store app from the emulator homepage and search for Garageband.

I also think it could be easier and have asked them some time ago if they could add Audiobus support to make it work with other apps too and they said it's 'noted' but it doesn't seem to happen.
It's a workaround as it now is (not too complicated, just a few steps more) and you can export single tracks if you wish. The quality of the tool and the app is very good though.

  • edited December 2019

It’s listed under portable multitrack recorders at Thomann. The competitors displayed are things like the boss looper and that Zoom one that looks like a mixer with onboard storage.

I’m guessing the classification of this as an audio interface is an error from the stores that have done that.

Would be amazing to see Audiobus support for the app but it’s going to be useful for me. Much better solution than dismantling my home setup if I want to do some portable recording at a game jam or similar event.

I suppose putting iOS before interface makes that sort of true from the retailer side but functionality is much closer to a portable recording device.

I’m very curious about the built in mic, the public seem very divided about the quality.

Got a nice cash discount in the current sale, free case and will probably go with Nectar 3 as my free software so I get melodyne light version which should be useful.

Edit: the wording from Izotope on that link is more than a bit misleading, marketing department in overdrive..

“So you're in the market to buy a new audio interface. You know that there are hundreds of options to choose from, with new ones being released on what seems like a monthly basis. One of the options is Spire Studio. Which, in many ways, is a typical audio interface.”

  • Any additional thoughts from the new users here? Missed the free software sale, but might pick one up soon

  • Great little device, would like to see Link added to the app but no complaints.

I’ve mainly been using it standalone with a childrens orchestra set that amazon double delivered.

I got the software and a travel case for free during the promo, very happy customer!

  • Bought one used for $200 and will have it next week - thanks!
